R. Murray Schafer, compositeur canadien est Cofondateur du "projet mondial d'environnement sonore, il publie en 1977 Le Paysage Sonore (originalement publié en anglais sous le titre The tuning of the world). Cet ouvrage, qui se veut en quelque sorte la synthèse de ses recherches en matière d'écologie sonore, lui vaut rapidement une reconnaissance internationale.
