Sougata Roy Chowdhury is one of the upcoming young musicians born in 1973 in a family of art and music. His father Prof. Sarbari Roy Chowdhury, an eminent sculptor of our country, is also a great lover and collector of classical Hindustani Music for about four decades. Sougata's mother Smt. Ajanta Roy Chowdhury studied Classical Hindusthani Vocal music in the great Agra Gharana. Sougata was brought up in an artistic and musical environment, which made him learn Classical Hindusthani music, and music became his first love from his early childhood. At the age of ten he started his lessons in classical Hindusthani instrumental music (Sarode) under the guidance of his Guru, Late Ustad Dhyanesh Khan who inherited the tradition 'Seni Gharana' music from (his grandfather) Late Padmabibhushan Acharya Ustad Allauddin Khan, (father)Padmabibhushan Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and (aunt) Vidushi Smt. Annapurna Devi. Sougata received his rigorous initial Talim from him, until his sudden and unfortunate death in 1991 at the age of 48. Sougata continued to study with Ustad Dhyanesh Khan's elder brother Ustad Aashish Khan, the foremost Sarode player of the Gharana. Presently, Sougata receives his regular Talim from Pandit Santosh Banerjee the foremost Sitar and Surbahar player and trainer living in Calcutta who in the disciple of Ustad Md. Dabir Khan Sahib of "Rampur SENI GHARANA" the great BINKAR of the family of Mian Tan Sen. Since 1994 Sougata started giving his solo public performances elsewhere in the country. Since year 2000 he has started performing regularly in abroad (France Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark). Actually Sougata Roy Chowdhury is also teaching as well in India then abroad.
